Horror movies were at their absolute BEST in the 1980's, in terms of cheap scares, nice gory special effects, etc.

I'm not talking about the high-profile ones like Halloween, Friday The 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. There were plenty of other great horror movies during that time that don't get as much love as "the big three".

What are some of the smaller, yet still great horror movies that you enjoy watching?

With the remake coming out soon (may already be out for all I know), now would be a great time for you to see the original "Stepfather" with that guy from Lost (forget his name). Great, suspenseful, and acting that doesn't make you laugh out loud at how bad it is. Everything you want in a great horror movie.

What's that you say? Suspense is nice but you want some more blood and guts? Check out "Silent Night, Deadly Night". All I have to say is this: You'll never look at a deer rack hanging on the wall in the same way ever again. :D

What are some others?

Too many to list... but how about Return of the Living Dead, Zombie, Prom Night, anything by Fulci and Argento... I could list a hundred.

"Zombie" is awesome, I have tried to get my wife to sit through it with me numerous times, but the most she can make it through is the zombie-vs.-shark scene (which is awesome in it's own right).

I've seen the original "Hellraiser" too many times to count, and unfortunately I've seen most of the crappy sequels. However, I've never seen "Hellraiser II: Hellbound" and I've always heard great things about it. I may try to catch it sometime this week.

The "splinter in the eyeball" scene is CLASSIC.

good topic, me and my girfriend are getting together this weekend and watching her niece and nephew, and watch horror movies all night.

"Tales From The Darkside" the movie,

Pet Cemetary 1 (i think that was made in the late 80s)

Childs Play (Chucky)

and my all time favorite horror movie "IT", i think that was made in 1990.

these arnt really "horror, horror" movies, but they scared the shit out of me when i was a kid

This thread could go on forever!! Awesomeness!

I like all the choices, and I'll check out the ones I haven't seen now.

I offer up Scanners, The Stuff, and Xtro as insanely scary early 80's horror/sci-fi!:pumpkin:

More fun trivia: Paul DeAngelo who plays one of the counselors is a friend of mine and lives in the same town as me. LOL

Monster Squad!

Oh, man so many great choices there. My wife and I just saw Monster Squad this past weekend and forgot how much fun it was. I was really worried that it wouldn't hold up (because it's been probably 15+ years since I've seen it), the language is a little dated since it came out in the 80's but other than that it holds up just fine.

The ones I highlighted are some I've still never seen. I've always been interested in C.H.U.D. but was worried it would be cheesy and no nice gore.

Day of the Dead, I've always heard how it really pales in comparison to Night & Dawn of the Dead so I kinda stayed away from it.

Good call on the first "Evil Dead", which was a straight-up horror movie and didn't have any of the slapstick from the other two.

"Re-Animator"...man, I haven't seen that in forever. Have you seen "Bride of Re-Animator" and "Beyond Re-Animator"? "Bride" kinda sucked but had good gore, but "Beyond..." was much better.

Anybody ever seen "Blood Beach"? I remember the tagline for the poster, "It's safe to go back into the water, you just can't get there" or something like that, lol.
