View Full Version : Painting plans for my Devastator

Guys, I am looking for criticism of my ideas of how I am going to paint Dev. Yays and Nays please and hardcore bashing is fine with me, I can take it.

Please don't be a nice a-hole, go ahead and let it out and attitudes won't bother me!

So, I plan on painting this guy along the color scheme of the Dreamwave Devastator from the comic books. Mutliple shades of green, purple, black, silver, and some robotic/metal tone parts (mostly brighter and cleaner metal tones sort of like stainless). I would like to add some dirty effects but sublte ones along the lines of energon sludge. I want to add this kind of purple-ish energon sludge to all of the constructicons as Devastator though so to look like they just finished digging and moving energon sludge all around pushing it with their buckets, shovels, mixing it, and hauling it.

I also want to add some very very thin watery consistent washes here and there along joints and some robotic gearing and tread gears to resemble oil leaking and whatnot (keep in mind all subtle - no overkill).

I plan on using a base color, then a lighter 1st layer color, and then an even lighter highlighting color to each figure and area of Devastator. For example, the chest plate will be painted first in black, then maybe a shade of gun metal, then maybe purple, and then finally and light highlighting app of light purple (this method for all of Devastator but applicable to each different color -- make sense)?

Please, what do you think? I am going for cleanliness with brighter tones of greens, purples, metals, etc. No dominent worn look and no physical damage effects only paint apps. The only effects will be shadowing in the deeper crevaces, energon slugde, and leaky oil effects.

Thanks! I know it's a long read.

If the chestplate and head are any indication of what the rest is going to look like, then I think it's going to come out awesome. I'm interested to see how you're going to paint the leaky mechanical parts.

I'm actually two steps behind you on my devi. I have one green picked out for the main color. Do you mind if I ask what you used for joints in the arms and elbows?

The sludge sounds interesting, but I'm not sold on how it would look.

I would also recommend that you put some metal wear highlights on the parts that would be digging to show where paint is being scraped off leaving bare metal.

Yo bro ,the only thing u need is an air brush.Cos if u wan to create solid clean shading effect air brush is the best choice .And also it can be done faster as the drying effect is very fast within seconds. But you have to use laquer paint ,testors has it all.
I'm from Sinagpore ,so I usaually use Gia ,mr hobby as the base laqer paint. These r strong paint which produce great result. If u want luminus colour texture u need to add on some extra stuff to the paint .I'm trying those on my commission devy and my next upcoming defensor. Will share these among u guys Cheers ;)
BTW where do u get those chest wing ,Might need your help in getting those good stuff .

Hey man, thanks for commenting. I do have an airbrush and I use it for some customs but I prefer hand brush painting over an airbrushed base coat first :)

I appreciate the tips and look forward to your paint apps! Ptitvite sent me this chest plate months ago - he said it was one of his last unfortunately. I know Frenzy Rumble casts these from time to time. JBarb78 made his own as well and it was sick!
