Making My Own Site (Need Advice)

I'm thinking of setting up my own website and am looking for some advice. Since there are a lot of you here with your own sites, I figured this would be a good group to ask. Would like to know which hosting services you use, how much they cost, who designs the pages. Any info would be great.
