Hi Guys,

Just want to ask you guys what are the pros and cons of these two paints when it comes to application, final output, and quality. I already researched about the common difference between these two but I want to know from your experiences which of these paint give more quality look. thanks! :)

Hey Mate

I personally have'nt used lacaquers so I can't help you there but enamels I avoid like the plague to the materials I use, the enamels can beacme sticky on certain materials ie plastics, rubber etc. Also enamels attract teh dust like flies to s*^t not good at all and you can never get it off the figure.

Acrylics in my honest opion are the way to go they adhere to almost anything service as long as it's clean and sometimes you might have to use an undercoate.

There are also many companies that make great acrylics for example: Gamesworkshop and Reaper Minatures are great for painting fantasy and scifi etc and Vallejo Pais are great for military subjects.

Hi Ron! thanks! I'm also using acrylic paint but sometimes I came up with a sandpaper texture finish which is not a good thing to see when it comes to an automobile figure like the transformers :) I want a smooth finish of paint like a real car paint job :)

Mate there could be few reasons why the paint is going like that.

1- the paint could be drying out try adding a small amount of water to the jar/bottle and give it a good shake that does help.

2- the brush you are using might be getting old as well and this can lead to streaks which make the paint look sandy.

3- do you give the item you are going to paint a wash in warm soapy water as you can get a factory residue on the model/toy and giving it a wash will get rid of this residue.

4- this is going to sound very wierd but using your own spit can help make the paint smoother due to the acid in the.(gross I know but it does work)

I use enamels and lacquers on almost everything. You can't use them on the soft plastic like Hemble mentioned. You must use chemicals to clean up as apposed to just water. I have found they adhere stronger than most acrylics. You get to find out how good a paint is when you paint a transformer and you have rub spots:)

However, I do use acrylics when I paint marvel legends figures....

@hemble thanks for the tips! I do wash everything before painting it.

@encline I'll try enamels for my next custom. by the way what final coating should I use with lacquer and enamels? I tried future floor polish with acrylics I'm just wondering if it will works with enamels and lacquer too?
