so, wifey tells me I have to paint my Daughters rooms, my day job is super busy right now, and to top it off I have a bunch of toy bashes in various stages on the go. Thankfully only one is commission.
This ever happened to you? Whats your coping mechanisim?
Should be in the basement doing something, but I'm watching my OIL versus The Preds with a couple Budweiser s, cheers

lol, all the time bro.

when life is stressing me out, i bash as soon as i can. if i ever get stressed at customs, i smoke a cigg. and jump back to it. and commissions are sometimes overwhelming, but I always give the clients WIP pics and updates, letting them know there's been delays for the commission, etc.

there's been countless nights where i'm trying to go to sleep, but i have commission customs in my mind, thinking damn i need to get that done asap, i need to send that client pics, i need to reply to a client, etc.

it's awesome tho, i love it to death

It's for sure tough to balance! The best way to "cope" is to explain to your wife that you don't want to shirk household responsibilities, professional obligations, and family time.

But you do have to have your own time for yourself, just you. It does help to have an understanding significant other, but even if they don't get into the hobby you love, they should respect you enough to understand that you love it and need it.

If you can make some cash doing it, then it becomes a self sustaining hobby! That's a total winner! If you can be profitable, your wife of course will live you for the extra income, be sure to share (flowers on Wednesday do soooo much for buying hobby time LOL!)

Time management is a very hard thing to come to terms with, I often do my kitbashing between midnight and 3 am during the week because that's total "me" time!! No distractions, no noise.

overwhelmed from the second I wake up to the second I fall asleep. If it's not customs, it's my house, if not the house, my daughter or fiance, if not them, then our cats, or car, drama, or something lol...

I was thinking last night though, I've been on commissions, I can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel with them, which is really nice, I have BOXES of customs I want to take on for ebay and various personal projects.

i wanna see that light at the end of your tunnel. have you quit taking commissions for the time being? or putting them on a waiting list?

cause those "boxes of customs" need some love bro!

my wife is great about it, especially since she bought some of the paint for the kids rooms with the paltry proceeds from my hobby.Hell she was cool even when it wasn't even self sustaining. But your right its all about time management and balance for sure, sometimes I feel like there isn't anytime for myself, hence the beers and hockey tonight!

Overwhelmed? Everyday and today especially. Just found out I need to have some mock ups and samples done for Shocker Toys and they need to be done in the next few days to make it to New York in time for the Convention. On top of a list of Commissions that has been challenging me left and right, leaving no room for personal projects. Not complaining at all cause I love it but sometimes my head just spins from it all.

I totally understand what you're talking about....I have a full time job (40hrs a week) as an assistant manager. I was just told that because of the economy I had to start working six days a week (for only 40hrs, no more, no less) for three weeks out of the month because we couldn't afford to give part timers the hours....I ususally work the closing shift so I get home after 9p.m. and that gives me just enough time to spend with my girlfriend and her kids if we have them that week....I eat dinner and watch some t.v. while thinking about working on customs the entire time....

I keep asking myself, why isn't your website up and running yet, why aren't your customs finished, why doesn't anybody here on this website have any idea if you are good at customizing or not....it's because of the pay job....I wish I could customize for a living but I just don't have the time right now to do that....I'm just thankful I have a job to keep a roof over our heads in this economy....

On my days off I come to this board and get inspired to get off my "just started working out and eating better and just quit smoking after twelve years" a$$ and finish and start the customs that I hope everyone will enjoy!

Thank you for your time....haha

I can't say I've ever been overwhelmed with action figure customs because I've never done them that heavily, but I have been overwhelmed with my prop replica commissions,I'm starting to get burned out on them.

When I had a job job, I would sometimes get overwhelmed. Doing a couple of commissions in a week with another I wanted to finish in time for Ebay Sunday, and several personal projects waiting under the bed was wearing on my mind one week. I have a 6 year old daughter and another on the way so it came to the point where I had to choose being serious about custom work or my jobby job. I quit the job and now suddenly I have NO commissions and this week has been crap on Ebay so far.
Do we all have rough weeks or have I made a big mistake? That question has been keeping me up at night lately.

Unicron9, I too had the same experience of choosing between my day job or my hobby job.
So it finally comes to a point where i have to make a decision, i choose my hobby job, till now i still have yet to know if i've made the right choice but i don't sweat about it, it is what i've always wanted to do. I believe we all have our rough weeks/times, we just got to have some faith. :D

Back to Topic,
Yeah i do, always overwhelmed by how much work i need to get done, empty websites, hanging all around WIPs, need to do list this and that and the golden question by my parents at irregular timings like, "So any earnings this month ?" Don't get me wrong they have always been supportive as i've shown results, just that it's inconsistent income (for me at least) & they hope tat i get a stable job.
But they don't know that this IS my stable job, for this lifetime as least. :D

PS. Being single helps for my case. But having a family makes you work harder !

Cheers all !
