So, this is a project that I've been working on for about the past three years, maybe four. I'm not only a huge Star Wars fan, but a big fan of the Indiana Jones Trilogy as well. Yes, I said "trilogy". Ahem.

Anyway, one of the coolest things about the final movie in the trilogy is Henry Sr's Grail Diary. There are oodles of websites about it, and plenty of people have made their own prop replicas and what not, and I decided I wanted to do one as well.

I was able to get several "templates" for the text of the book. There was a diary included with a video game of the movie from back in the day, and someone was kind enough to transfer all the text from that into a word file. There were also several other fan made diaries out there that contained other pages. There are several pages that have been seen in the films and several books that I have that show the pages in their entirety or almost entirely.

I took as many sources as I could, and merged as much info as I could into a single, flowing story, and created a large text document in word from that. Next, I went about reading through ALL the pages (and if I'm not mistaken, it's close to 200) several times, correcting typos and mis-spelled words. I had to re-arrange lots of pages, because they were in mixed up order and the story didn't read in chronological order.

There are also plenty of drawings and maps and stuff inside the diary, which I had to get from several other sources.

THEN I had to learn about bookbinding. Yes, I took a quick course at the local high school and several workshops at craft stores to learn how to actually bind a book, using thread and the proper types of end papers, and stuff like that. AND watched a shitton of YouTube videos. Hey, I want this to be as authentic as possible. Right now the book is going to get printed using a font called "Henry's Hand" which was made by a fan to resemble the handwriting in the original diary. However, all the real replica prop guys make their own hand written diaries, so that's what my final version will consist of. Shit, I've read through this so many times I could probably sit down and write the whole thing out from memory, lol!

So, I did a quick printout of all the pages, trimmed them to the proper size, and put them together real quick just to see what it would look like... here are some photos of my latest test print of my almost completely ready to be printed diary...

The colored tabs on the sides of the pages are just my way of knowing where each signature starts in the book itself. There are also colored tabs on the top, showing where there are more corrections to be made... it's like a never ending process.

Anyone that knows anything about Henry's Grail Diary knows that the coolest part is the inserts. All kinds of things are shown within the Diary during the film - plane/train tickets, telegrams, various foreign currency... all kinds of neat stuff. Again, doing a ton of research into the book, I gathered resources to create all kinds of replica items... I'll take photos of some of those items soon.

That is amazing! Don't let the Nazis get it. Will it have Adolf's autograph? :)

It will indeed have Adolf's auto, wouldn't be complete without it :D

While I'd love to take the credit for creating the pages like the stained glass window, alas I cannot. The pages were all created already when I downloaded the different versions of the book in digital form. All I did (and am still doing) is re-arranging the order of the pages in some instances and cleaning them up a little.

I've also made several pieces of paperwork that go inside the diary.

This is a letter from Muhammad al-Jawf to Henry

This I don't think is actually in the book or seen in the film, but I thought it was cool. It was actually created for some kind of RPG game, but I did a little alteration to it and created it for Henry. I still need to do the photograph but everything else is there.

I have some more stuff too, like some train and plane tickets, various international currencies (mostly real actually), a concert ticket, a ticket to one of Henry's lectures... there's a bunch of stuff still to photograph.

Are you teastaining the pages, and the wear on the passport and props, or were they there before hand and are, in essence, "copied right into the page?

Also if you are teastaining them, is it random, or do you have good enough source material to actually recreate the stains "prpoerly"?

Sorry for the offbeat questions, I think this is a stellar project!

Yes, I'd like to know more. I wanted you to know that I was so blown away by this project of yours that you've inspired me to do a leatherette journal to go along with my Steampunk Omega Supreme. I also plan on doing some copper leaf words on the cover and am wondering if any of you guys have an opinion on the best way to do that (stencils, method, etc.).

Wow, talk about a blast from the past, lol.

Sorry BigHank, I didn't see your questions when you posted them, but I'll answer now. The pages you see are indeed stained by hand with tea and not pre-printed that way. Several different teas, actually. I started out with plain white paper, and printed the pages that I wanted. After being trimmed to the proper size, and left to dry for 24 hours (even though they are laser printed, I still gave them a day to dry which I know is unnecessary but made me feel better, lol) I let them soak in a pot of brewed Lipton tea for about 15 minutes each. This gave the paper a nice "base" coating, 98% uniform but with minor blemishes and darker/lighter spots here and there.

After letting the pages dry from the Lipton bath, I brewed up some darker Earl Grey tea and placed it into a spray bottle. I then sprayed the pages completely at random with the Earl Grey tea and allowed that to dry. Then a few other applications of various other teas and coffee in much smaller doses here and there. Overall I was pretty happy with the results.

As for being "screen accurate", I'm sure I could drive myself even more crazy and try to get as many screen grabs as possible, but I don't feel that it's really worth it on a piece like this. Sure, there are some pages that are well known within the community, and any seriously distinguishing marks on those pages I would like to do, but overall I don't think there is enough source material available. Add to that the fact that most of this diary is made up to begin with, having never appeared on screen.

Desertscorpion, I'm extremely honored to hear that my project has so inspired you to make your own similar book for a project. Now I know what the other prop makers must have felt like when I told them that their work had inspired me to make my own copy of this book.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about copper leaf to help with that part of it. Good luck with your project and I can't wait to see some pictures :D

Well worth reviving my man! Thanks for the walk through on the tea staining technique, I know of it but never have tried it yet.

This is one of those cerebral projects that you can see the love the artist puts in it. This is epic already, when complete it will be other-worldly!:cool:

This is one of my favorite projects I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. I only wish I could rifle through the journal with my own two hands.
