OK i have had this rattling around in my brain for awhile. Has anyone extracted the ink from a ball point pen and used it for anything? If so what would you thin it with the stuff comes out like mud.

I've not heard of using ball point pen ink, but I have heard of using artist inks for details and washes. The kind of ink you put in a rapidograph. Tonyscustomz I think has used the technique before, i'm sure he'll give you some pointers.:cool:

i use inks but i want to tap into the seemingly unlimited resource of pen ink. i can pilfer pens all day you know. where as my ink cost 3 bucks a bottle and have to wait for mail or drive outa my way. also pen ink has some kind of weird copper color in it that may be usefull idk

Well I'll expect a full report! Sounds like if it's thinned enough it should work. I think the battle will be protecting/clear coating the color coat underneath it for "accident control". And you are right, you can collect 2-3 pens a day without even trying!:D

i tried it...and..it failed....on my custom... so, i used a sharpee instead..then applied clear coats.
what happend was that ink from ball pen or any pen tends to be sticky, but doesnt have that adhesion on plastic or metal, when opend from its container and applied.
it works well on finer openings (like a ballpen) which dries it up instantly. so, yeah..it failed.
i used it on finer applications for very thin lines...but it failed, that was like years ago.
ive used sharpees instead....but...for really smooth and durable lines, i can go for water slide decals from gundams....they have the thinnest of the thin lines and are so easy to apply.
hope this helps..in any bit.

It does allot thank you hmm i guess i will just have to dump some of the sticky stuff and start trying different solvents to see if it thins it. You said it will not stick though so it may all be futile. :( thanks again

A good art store will have the ink that comic inkers use, this is your best bet for washes. It's not as cheap as nabbing pens but you dont have to worry about thinning it out or matching colors. India ink is especially dark but not too thick.

Just remember that pen is is designed for paper and not plastics. If you try line filling (even in a diluted state) the ink will not fully dry and will end up being tacky.
