First and foremost, WELCOME ABOARD!! We are glad you have decided to come over and JOIN THE ACTION at ProCustomizers.com! We are very excited to offer a place to learn, show off a bit, exchange info, and...most importantly...to HAVE FUN!!
This site welcomes everyone from hobbyists, collectors, pros, or even guys who just love to look at really great custom work. However, there may be one question that some of you are wondering about: "How do I become a PRO-MEMBER?"
Please review these requirements by clicking here (http://www.procustomizers.com/faq.php?faq=boardrules#faq_promembership)
You may ask, "Why the rules?" Simply put, professionalism. Procustomizers.com is the first of it's kind where the the focus is dedicatation to artists who have found a way to bring in a source of income by creating custom action figures, and upcoming artists who would like to do the same. Procustomizers.com, as it grows, will become "THE" place to show the world what we do, how we do it, and that what we do is serious business!
Our intentions are to encourage everyone who wants to have a source of income with custom action figures to do so in a professional manner. This site will help all of us set a new standard for ourselves as a "union". This is a fresh start. So, being that it is a fresh start, we will have guidelines and stick to them.
"What will be some of the benefits of going Pro-Member?"
We are working very hard with big companies to make many things available to Pro-members. Including but not limited to:
- Discounts at on-line toy retailers
- Discounts at on-line art suppliers
- Clothing
Also as a bonus, Pro-members will have special opportunities to get special promotions via our YOUTUBE SPOTS when they participate in our EBAY CHARITY AUCTIONS.
Some other benefits include:
The ability to display the ProCustomizers.com Pro-Membership badge on any auctions or sites.
Larger private messaging box. Rather than 50 for standard members, Pro-Members get 300.
Access to the Pro-Member's only sections of the forum.
Access to post self advertised portfolio in the Artist Gallery section.
Able to participate in ProCustomizers.com upcoming collaboration projects(s).
Able to participate in ProCustomizers.com upcoming contest(s).
So, in the end, there are many great advantages to becoming a Pro Member, but the most important one is this: We are a COMMUNITY. Look at the definition of "community": a group that is organized around common values.
We don't belittle each other, we don't look for arguments. We give credit where credit is due because we are PROFESSIONALS. This isn't like George Orwell's "1984" novel where you have to worry about "Big Brother" looking over your shoulder.
We are a TRUE community, and we want you to feel right at home.
Thanks for hanging out!!!
Procustomizers.com staff"

I posted a question over on TFW asking how people thought about selling their customs, and I kind of got the impression it was looked down upon. If I can do something I enjoy AND make some extra money, why wouldn't I?

There is an old saying that goes: "Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life"
That is our sincere hope for everyone here at ProCustomizers.com
Have some fun! Learn, teach, show us whatcha got, and take a look at what everyone else has too! Feel free to jump on into any discussion without thinking twice and give some input.

I can see how some of the perks of membership do apply for sellers of customs,
I can't see how cutting off half of the sections of the members that enjoy doing this and want to learn more.
You should open all the sections to all members. Save the discounts, banners, extra storage space and advertising for the Pro Members. Just my opinion.

I think it depends on how attached you are to your custom. There are some customs that I made for myself that I just can't think of selling. Then I'll make customs for figures that I don't really care about and sell those. Since I started commissions, I have no attachment to those figures at all so it's easy to part with. AND I still get to paint them. It actually forces me to do a good job too.

Thanks for being open about what you feel. We resect all opinions. Even when they differ. And we are always open to new ideas. And as long as conversations are kept respectful, insightful, and encouraging to the community, we shall keep them public.
So i guess the big question is: How important is the information in the pro-members section to non-sellers? It is not. We knew and understood the title "pro-member" would not set well with some when we started this site. We also knew that having a section only for sellers of customs would put some people off. The fact is, we want it that way. It helps weed out those who are in it for the love of the game, or those looking for titles. Which at the end of the day are nothing more than that, titles. (Although they will have some really cool perks:))
There is no difference between pro-members and non-promembers other than that one group has worked really hard to get to where they are in a business. They have marketed themselves, pushed their products, and have spent YEARS perfecting what they do. So yeah, it seems only fair that they get some "special" privileges.
If someone wants to go pro, they will do what the guys quoted above are doing, stepping up their game. Even thought there work is fantastic, they may not have made some income with it. If someone doesn't want to go pro, but they want to improve for their own figures, their art, or heck, just want to drool over some of the amazing work here, PERFECT!!!

While I understand there needs to be perks, lots of guys here really deserve them too. But when people are interested in the art or learning Tricks we I always turned to TFW or Section 7. This would be the first site where members are cut off from the WIPs, and Tricks of the trade. That’s not good. Pro Member, Jr. Member who cares, but it starts less to feel like a community and more like a popularity contest.
Pro Member sections also include sections that aren’t related to selling customs such as General, Rant, Non Custom General conversations .Now that feels more like your not part of the community period.
All viewable sections should be open to all the members, hide the sections you don’t want us to see and make it flexible so we want to visit the site, makes friends and share a common passion. You don’t have to sell anything to have a Pro passion to create.
Having a Pro Sections that’s Private seems pretty snobbish. Especially when most of you guys all learned the tricks through other free to all sites such as Sector 7 the Radicons. Where would we all be without Ptitvite’s How to build a Devastator blueprints? They would end up in the Pro Section as well.
I made my first custom from studying pics from Spurt Reynolds of Dinotitan over and over, asking him questions. Giving me WIPs and tricks that helped me. I begged him to build me one, but he doesn’t do commissions at all. Do you not consider him a Pro? Some of his WIPS would of ended up in your Promember section and I may have never see them. That’s why separate forums are pretty lame IMO.

I think the main miscommunication here is what defines a "pro". Here is the definition of "professional": a person who performs commercially in a field typically reserved for hobbyists or amateurs.
It's not a popularity contest and it's not being "snobbish". It's a site for PROFESSIONALS, meaning people who earn a living by their craft. At the same time, there are sections available for anybody who wants to learn (regardless of how "popular" they are) that include:
- Customs Discussion: Want to talk about an idea you have, what kinds of tools would serve you best, what would be the best figure to use, etc? This is the place.
- Customs Showcase: Want to show off your latest Masterpiece, or bring up a "blast from the past" that still kicks @$$? This is the place.
- Tutorials and How-To's: If you're wondering how somebody was able to get articulated fingers out of a brick hand, or how to install LED headlights in under 10 minutes, or if you're just looking for ways to refine your painting technique, etc. This is the place.
- Ebay Showcase: If you're trying to sell your latest custom, or if you noticed someone else's kick-ass custom on Ebay, show it off here!
- The Trading Post: If you're looking for certain parts to complete your project, or if you're trying to get rid of your junk and make some space, check out this forum.
- Member Showcase: If you're showing all of the customs from your website, or if you want to show off a gallery of your latest completed work or art, then look no further.
All of these sub-forums are readily available to anyone and everyone who wants to learn and/or refine their craft. However, the "pros-only" section is for those who earn a living by their craft. One of the reasons why we make it "Pro Only" is that we want to make sure that everybody is contributing to the site and helping each other out.
I know for a fact that everybody knows some poster somewhere who never posts in another topic to help out anybody else, yet whenever they have something to sell they're pimping it out like crazy. This is NOT what we want here, and we want to make sure that if you are a professional, then you ACT LIKE A PROFESSIONAL. Therefore, if you have access to the pro-member section, it's because (1) you earn a living through your craft and (2) you are an active member of the custom community, offering tips and other types of help along the way.

Well, no. We are strongly against categorizing different levels of customizers here. No one is better than anyone else skill wise or anything, the differentiation between being a Pro-Pember and those who are not is simply that a Pro-Member SELLS their customs.

First and foremost, we are glad you get the point about feeling free to speak your mind!!
It is obvious that you are quite enthusiastic. I would just like to point out two attitudes here:
Go back and read the responses.
Some are saying "yes, sweet, great site, a place to grow as an artist!"
Then there are trepsonses with, "lame, snoobish, not cool, this site sucks!"
Do you see the difference? Some are understanding the point that we (not just us mods, but all members here) want to push everyone to be better. We want people in the pro section with great attitudes that are willing to better themselves as artists and have displayed a high level of professionalism for some time .
I think your biggest hang up is not enough threads in the General Admission section. Is that correct? Trust us, we want honest opinions about how to improve the site for everyone that loves this art. So some of your thoughts are being considered. We to feel there should be more for EVERYONE to talk about.
As for things such as (but not including unless he wants to share them here) Ptitvite's blueprints, and things that will help artist grow, those will be including in the General discussion area soon. So be patient with us. There is no need to rush and jump into the pro section. Unless you are ready to learn about marketing and you have been selling your work for some time. Learn how to perfect your skills first:) No rush.
If you also have a problem with the rules we have set here, we can't help you there. We are sticking to our guns. All of us spent a lot of time working on guidelines that would be fair. We knew some would not like it, but as you can see, others really appreciate it. We are sticking to those rules, strictly.
I also would like to address this "popularity" issue. How is it a popularity contest? It is black and white, friend or not, popular or not, if you do not fit the guidelines, then you do not fit them. That is pretty simple. Look at the pro-members on here. Some have been at this game for 5-10 years plus!!!! So is it because they are popular or because they meet the requirements?
Thanks again guys!!!

First let me say I mean no disrespect to anybody on this site, I have what I consider to be friends here and some of them are Mods on this forum. That being said , I see your all of your points, but this seems to me (and maybe just me) If you’re a ProMember you love the idea, if you’re someone trying to learn it’s not the greatest idea. This is the resource and you can’t have it.
To me, info shared should be free to all,. I want to see a WIP from Fenzy Rumble among others. That stuff use to be for everyone. These are some of the things that made me want to do customs. This site not only effects us at here, but Promembers who use to post on other forums may feel inclined not to post there stuff on others. Most of the Mods use to always post tips and tricks and may not want to now. These Mods (including you) are the people we always look to for some answers and tips.
I get that this is your forum, and rules are rules. But remember what brought you guys to open a site like this. Rules, regulations and most likely infractions . I was just surprised that you guys would draw a line in the sand and set requirements. It’s gonna be hard to be build a community when you’re labeling and separating your members. Plus what level is Pro? Who’s the judge? Your custom is gonna sell much higher then mine. But if someone buys mine, is that pro?
I have never once said this site sucks, I actually support it and hope to learn from it.
I do not consider myself a Pro in anyway. Matter of fact I pay Pros for there best work. I’m learning and not even close to perfecting my skill but I sure love doing it. Don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Even though my wife wish’s I would..

Look for junkers or cheap lots to practice painting on. And just don't expect to produce something like Ryan's Defensor the first time out. Cutting and epoxying my transformers still intimadates me. Although Nightbird/Chromia's ninja mask is looking goooood.

like formula93 said, buy junkers and incomplete lots to practice on. and if you can find KOs in any stores around you, buy them as well. and read a bunch of tutorials, painting, dremeling, drybrushing, etc. they help a lot

Ill say this, I'm pretty new to it. It can get discouraging but here is what made me want to see my project through.
Find something that inspires you, another artist’s work. Try to copy it, ask questions and keep it simple at first.
Make sure its something you really would like but be reasonable. You won’t paint, sculpt, bash like some of the pros here on the first one but with time you come up with something to be proud of.
Trust me Tools are everything. A Dermal IMO is a must have. Check the other sites as well, Sector 70 and TFW help sections. You will find a tutorial somewhere about something.
Good Luck!

HAHAH... My wife thought I was crazy.... until I started making money!!!
/\ This! My wife has been very supportive of my sculpting and customs stuff since it started paying a lot of our bills! It gives me an excellent excuse to play with toys, and flex my creative muscle!
Personally, I love the idea of this site, and I appreciate the opportunity to kick ideas around with folks who are of a like mind, and want to make some money doing what they enjoy doing.
I struggled for a long time doing free lance work, but now because of my customs work, I am actually getting more commissions for other art work.
Reading around here, it seems that this is encouraged and supported. I think this site will help get anybody to the level they want to be at, whether they choose to sell or not. And they can do it with out fear of reprisal or judgement based on that choice. I think other sites may offer good resources, but folks who may (for unknown reasons) begrudge us the ability to sell our work, occasionally sully the fun! This site certainly has that in spades (fun that is!)
I am proud to be a part of a site that looks to bring toy customizing to a new level! Pro or not, I think every member will find what they need here, or know that asking the question will get them the most professional answer:cool:
I can't wait to showcase some of my upcoming stuff here!

I would like to submit my site for review to be considered for pro status. I have been customizing for 7 yrs now and it has basically became what I do. I mostly do custom sports figures however with some of the inspiration I see here I am tempted to try some different projects. If anyone is interested in checking out my site it is www.allstarcustomsonline.com. I would love to become involved in this great community. Thanks guys!

So can I actually get commissions through this site? If so that's great! I sell customs almost every week on Ebay and get commissions here and there too. Any extra business is more than welcome!

I can't make myself sell my Classics Galvatron either, but he's just too small compared to the other guyz in that line.

Hi, New guy here and this site looks very promising! Glad to see everyone is serious about customizing and there are no trolls running around this site.
I'm not sure if I am a Professional though...
-I do sell customs on a regular basis, and some sell for lots of money. The most expensive one I have sold was for $300. Although some of my past customs were pretty bad, recently I feel like they have been improving. I am currently working on a bunch of customs that are my best yet.
-I also don't have a website. I just don't have the knowledge of how to create one and I don't want to pay too much for one.

X-men movie cyclops. It was great because the hole on the back of the trench for the button (light up feature) for Cyclops, matched up perfectly to insert Blade's sword into.

I'm another newbie. I set up a studio, Highmore Studios, 4 years ago as a way to sell my paintings & self-published comics. I was making customs for myself when a couple of people asked if I took commissions. After that, I tried ebay. Now, I'd estimate that 85-90% of my income comes from customs. I have quite a decently-sized base of customers who generally order a custom per month, but I still accept commissions and still put the occasional figure on ebay.
I'm also hopefully going to have a small exhibition of some of my custom work in a local gallery in the next couple of months.

soooo i guess i'd like to go pro? i've done custom toys for over 2 years, my biggest claims to fame was my district 9 mecha and my dead space customs. i've won custom of the week over on toynewsi 3+ times, and over at toyark, also got interviewed by poeghostal. i also have a terrible habit of turning statues into poseable figures...also my stuff shows up on google under my name chris hooton. so please let me know what i need to provide to get the neato badge! thanks!

I just found you guys for some weird reason. I'm LOVING this concept and the forums so far. I know I just signed up, but I'm putting my bid in to go for Pro. Many of you here know me and my work already and I've been selling it on and off for over ten years.
Recently Customizing has become one of my only sources of income due to the economy and job market. If I can start selling more it will be my only source and that will be awesome I Love doing it for fun and profit.
Here's a sample of my work.

New to the site but Ive been doing this full time now since August and on and off for the last 3 years. I am a part of SlayerDesignStudios sculpting team link here:http://slayerdesignstudio.3dcartstores.com/Weaponx-Customs_c_55.html, and have been putting stuff up on ebay when possible. I make most of my money from commissions at this point. I really like working for Slayer because it lets you really contribute to the customizing community by supplying other modders with needed parts. So I would love the oppurtunity to go pro and to continue to contribute to this site.

These guys seem very fair. If you haven't gone pro, then there's probably a requirement not met.

3. Artist must contribute and be active on this site.
4. Artist must be willing to share and take advice as we are a place to grow and learn.

All very genuine and true, what we do isnt easy and reputation is every thing. without "street cred" no one will take us seriously. and as one of us that does earn an extra income through customizing, this forum is a great outlet for constructive criticizem and insperation for new ideas and what to strive to achieve.
