My favorite, taking into account challenge, re-playability, story, controls, and overall gaming experience, is still GTA IV, with COD: World at War and Assassin's Creed II coming in at a very close second. And when I say very, I'm talking an ass-hair for a margin.
If we're talking 64-bit, N64's Goldeneye, hands down.
16-bit, gonna have to be Super Mario World.
8-bit, close tie between Metroid and Super Mario Bros. 3.
And of course, Dig-Muthafuckin'-Dug!
Thoughts???

Remember arcades? Do they even still have them?
Remember how you would put your quarter up to reserve the next game?
I used to be so good at Donkey Kong I could literally play it for hours on a single quarter. I would play so long I could "sell" my game to the next up for like a buck......
Dragon's Lair broke new ground for video games back then.
My sister could kick ass on Space Invaders.
As you can see it's been a few decades since I played video games. They look very cool nowadays though.

I remember the quarter reserve, back when they took quarters. Nowadays it's like $2 to play the crappy games, you gotta take out a second on the house for a night out at Dave-n-Bust-your-wallet. I managed to last around an hour at Ivan Stewart's Off Road on $.50 once, probably my all-time arcade best.

Oh yeah, I guess D&B is the closest thing to an arcade now. I must say, I did dig those old school line graphic games like Tempest and BattleZone. Though I wasn't great at them. Loved Robotron, but my OCD/ADD wouldn't allow me to progress too far through the really frenetic rounds.
I do remember playing Doom in the mid '90s at my drummer's house. I guess that's the last time I played a video game.

Oh God, I probably spent days playing Doom, that summer you couldn't pry me away from the computer.

Star Control II is my favorite of all-time.
Now it's open source and free.

We've had a computer in the family ever since my dad got a C=64 back in the early 80s, with loads of cassette tapes full of games. But my favourite of all time is definitely a tie between LucasArts' X-Wing and Microprose' Grand Prix II. I'm a huge SW and F1 nut and I must've destroyed thousands of TIE Fighters and won the Monaco Grand Prix at least 30 times. Awesome times.
Nowadays, the games all look very, very cool and the multiplayer aspect is pretty awesome too, but there's so many sequels and similarity between games, originality is hard found.

The problem is that the big titles aren't going to stray too far from what is known to be profitable. If you want a chance at some originality the indie sector is the best bet, but again, there's a lot of wading through dross to find the gems.
My old school favourites are Jet Set Willy, or Quake 1, but I spent an extreme amount of time playing Interstate 76 / 82. Good times, man.

I didn't end up doing the werewolf quests (companions) but I did Finnish the main storyline and keep trying to clear out all my quests but EVERYTIME I do them I get like 3 more! Talked to so many daedric princes my back hurts from all the evil weapons they give me!

I used to kick ass at Centipede. And yes Big Hank they still have arcades. There is one in the Deptford Mall in NJ that has been there since I can remember. Used to spend a lot of time and money in there.

I'd forgotten about that one, 5th semester of college I think I played that more than I did homework. I had something like 239 hours, mostly spent organizing materia for chain spells. I saw a youtube vid of some guy who organized his final match with Sephiroth, only entering 1 command that unleashed an entire series of spells that smoked him in 1 move. If they ever finish the HD remake of that game that they've been promising, I'll most likely be picking that one up.
Techmo Bowl (the original) and Mike Tyson's Punchout for the NES.

hell yes. I remember reading nintendo power for the weaknesses of each boxer. Techmo bowl was great too, if I recall, you could upgrade your team's players, right? I remeber nes all star baseball also, we knew a cheat to upgrade the heck out of our players.

Ah, memory lane. lol
All my favorite games are from the previous generation. I think it boils down to replayability for me. I've played all the Zelda, Metroid and Castlevania games over and over so many times and they are all still fun.
I just picked up a Korean game system called the Caanoo and its awesome. I have NES, SNES, GB/GBC/GBA, Sega Genesis/Master System, Neo Geo, PS1 and Mame/CPS2 all on this one handheld system. Early Christmas present for myself lol.

isn't it crazy to think that the entire NES library would be like 1MB if put on a hard drive. There are some awesome emulators out there on the web. what's extra-cool is that a lot of them offer a "save anytime anywhere" option, which makes fighting ANY boss cake.
When I first got my own pc, back in 2000, there were a ton of emulators out on the net. I remember one was called MAME. You could get them for old video games but you could also get them for old Arcade games.
I remember having the real arcade versions of Ms Pacman and Mat Mania, in particular. That Mat Mania was a flash from the past, great game.
I got there in the nick of time, by early 2001, they were already starting to outlaw the game files as piracy and you would go to sites where you were supposed to be able to download them and they were already taken down. I used to have all of them on a CD, but I've since lost them.
When I first figured out emulators it was like opening pandoras box. Loading from save states is awesome if you really eff up. My complete collection of NES with emulator is only 111 mb lol
An they all fit in my pocket.
