Hands down, one of my favorite all time movies (with Kurt Russell). This new one looks good as a prequel but not so sure about the woman character...not being sexist BELIEVE ME, it's rather that The Thing just needs to be a man's movie with man vs monster - to help me be reminded of Mack in the first 80s remake.

I'm excited about this too, but the CGI from the trailers looks shitty. I hope they don't blow it.

I saw this yesterday. and coming from someone who hasn't seen the original, I thought the new movie was rather ok. I saw it with my father and older brother. My dad's a big movie buff, and he thought it was a great adaptation of the original. So I'm looking forward to checking out the original movie now.
On a side note: When we arrived, (keeping in mind my wallet was stolen last week (no I.D.), my father went straight to the concession stand, while me and my oldest brother bought the tickets. I said to the 16 year old teen girl, "I need 3 for "the thing".
She responded, "I'm gonna need to see all 3 ID's".
Ha! I'm standing there with my 42 year old brother, and my brother demands, "Do you really want to see my 65 year old father's ID, he's standing right over there at the concession stand".
The little girl didn't say another word and handed me the tickets. It's such bullshit too, b/c that particular theatre has become over-run with nothing but teenagers who "run" the theatre so to speak.
The last movie my dad and I saw there prior (dreamhouse), the volume was so low, we couldnt understand the dialogue and the picture was out of focus. Problems we had to get up and go get fixed, at least my dad did.

I guess that girl has seen the old "teenagers disguised as 65 year old men trick" before. :)
I did want to see it at first but then it just occurred to me, I just don't want to see remakes anymore.

Yeah, I like it too. I thought it was a perfect adaption to the original and in fact where it ends, the original takes off. The two movies actually meet from the new THING's end, which becomes the original's beginning. Awesome stuff and by the way, you'll really like Kurt Russell's character, Mack. He makes a strong lead in the movie and keeps it from start to finish.

LOL, the Kurt Russel Thing was a remake......

True it, was. BUT, the 1940s or 60s (whatever it was) version was simply stupid :)
Solrac, it's NOT a remake. In the Kurt Russell version, an American scientist base located in the antarctic gets pulled into a crazy situation where 2 Norwegian scientists are shooting from a helicopter at a husky and both the dog and the Norwegians are heading right toward the Americans who don't know what the hell is going on. The story takes off from there moving forward. It never tells you what happened to the Norwegians or why they were after the dog. Later we learn that all the Norwegian scientists were dead at their base and died some really gruesome and mutated deaths. That's it, you never know what actually happened to the Norwegians.
NOW, the new movie, 'The Thing', is about what happened to the Norwegians.

GGGGaaahhhhHH!!!!!! Don't say that, dman younguns today.....:D
Some of the best sci-fi ever written was written in the 40' and '50s! Most of the Blockbusters in sci-fi cinema in the last 10 years have been from stories written in the 50's.
I will agree the John Carpenter (1982-3?) Thing is superior, plus mega bonus points for anything with Kurt Russel in it.

lol man! I actually saw the 'original' thing. It had a tin man looking thing walking around in it and it was...black and white, WTF?!?
I think the one of the better old movies is, The Day the Earth Stood Still. That was pretty neat in ancient days :)

The Day the Earth Stood Still remake was travesty. Nothing at all to do with the original, which was a perfect sci-fi flick.
Off the top of my head Paycheck, Minority Report by Phillip K Dick was written in the '50s
I am Legend was a remake of "Omega Man" which is based off the story "I am Legend" by Matheson in the '50s.
I, Robot based off Asimov stories from the '50s.
Blade Runner of course is Pillip K Dick again in the Late 60's.

Dang! I thought blade runner was awesome and I liked Omega Man with C. Heston, but that was really vampire-like people rather then super mutant albinos like in I Am Legend. Yeah, I guess some of the older movies were ahead of their times and were actually pretty good. I think my favorite top 2 older movies are The Odd Couple and The Pink Panther with Peter Sellers.

I love Peter Seller in the PP series, so damn funny!
Yeah, they don't call the '50s the golden age of Sci-f- for nothing eh?

Yeah, I know. This is remake of a remake or would this be a second remake? Not a remake of the remake but a second remake of the original? UGH!

Solrac...it's not a remake. It's an entirely different story dude, it's a prequel. it's what happened 'before' the americans encountered 'the thing'.

Prequel you say? Then that changes things then. Only slightly though.
