and odd but cool commission, G1 Soundwave and minions (Ravage and Laserbeak) painted in chrome (which is a bi_ch to photograph) the client also ordered a set of G2 style Stunticons, similar to the last set I've done which can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/accardi1/sets/72157622565436556/

Anyway, here's Soundwave

Did he ask you to add chrome chains to them?

They look beyond nice though. A interesting request that is for sure. And for some reason this chrome job you have done doesn't hide the details like I've seen other. Like it's reflecting too much light and keeping your eyes form making out the panel linings. But your I can see it perfectly clear.

Interesting commission. Looks great, almost like an award or trophy type deal. The chrome definitely works against you when doing pics eh?

Very interesting indeed. Something I have never seen before. Why did he want them all in chrome?

Well it's that and the fact that I wish I had somthing "decorative" to reflect off him that is nearby, I tried, but between the chrome on the custom and the reflective base I use, it causes poltergeists to form and go all over the place. I think if I ever have to shoot photos of chromed customs, I will invest in some small desk lamps with multiple color bulbs in them...

it's a formula which took forever to "get right"

The base coat is more important than the chrome coat. I tried Alclad's base black (A very high gloss lacquer black) but it isn't too strong on plastic, might scratch and show wear, plus it takes 5+ hours to dry. I tried MANY other types of black gloss, the best I've found is House of Kolorz : Kustom Kolorz Gloss black (also a lacquer, but very strong) dries to the touch in about 20 minutes.

Once that's dry (even a little tacky is better) I air brush on Alclad II Chrome (lacquer) lightly over it, applied in a brushing manner. When dry (about 2 minutes) I wipe away any dust, and it's done. I custom clear coat with a mix of Testors high gloss mixed with Alclad's crystal clear.

Here's alclad's website:

You can find this paint on ebay, here's the guy I buy from:

Appreicate the response and will look into the paints. Do most of you guys airbrush your customs. I tend to only hand brush my figures because I had such a hard time with airbrush clogging etc that I gave up on it. I would assume if I'm going to attempt any of these other genres that I would need to use the airbrush. One other question If I was to do say a gijoe or star wars custom how would you go about doing the joints to avoid oaint scratching off. Also what type of paint would you use. I am using acrylic on the sports guys just wondering if I should use the same on any of the others.
