The Crew of Serenity, Midbulk Transport, Firefly Class

So, here they are, those Big Damn Heroes.

It is still very early in my career as a customizer. Please consider the learning curve when critiquing. I fully honest, even brutal feedback. How else would I learn?

Before continuing there are a few things to explain. When this project began, I did not realize the parts needed, vs. the parts available. Because of this, some characters suffered. This is most evident with Inara, Simon, and River... in that order. My hope is to do better when I might have the parts to do so.

The start of this was being inspired by a few parts that would be perfect for one or another. I thought, if I am going to make one, I need to make them all.

So here is a brief description of the parts that were used, to the best of my remembering. Most are G.I.Joe 25th parts, unless otherwise specified.

Never seen the show or movie but these are pretty nice customs. Heck of a lot of part swapping too.

Thanks for noticing this thread and thanks for all the kind words. I put alot of work into these, so it's fantastic to find that work appreciated. Seems only right to list the recipe, help give a greater understanding for all that went into them.

For those of you that haven't seen the show/movie, what are you waiting for?!?
Hulu the episode titles "The Train Job" and then decide if it's something you could get into. I am fairly sure that if given the chance, everyone can find something to love about "Firefly".

Not gonna happen. I'm still Flying and I aim to misbehave. ;)

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

These are awesome. Seriously. I've been meaning to do this forever and you beat me to it. Rock on man.

Wow, do I hate you. My Jayne and Mal have been on hold for the longest time. I love the different parts that are used, from all different lines. You'd never know they weren't meant for each other. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll get off my duff and get to work now.

Sorry to have caused you to have to work... and the hate. :nana:

As far as the different parts are concerned, I just look around at all the figures and fodder I have about and what works finds me as much as I find it.

Please let me know when you get yours done so I can have a :peek:

Well, this is what I have done for Janye right now. (http://banthaskull.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2933)

I used pretty much the same parts as you, with the exception of the head, which I got from TriGate.

The Tri-Gate head works great, good choice.

That body mold just sings Jayne like a Canton bar, doesn't it? Please keep me posted on the progress. I love seeing all the different takes on these characters.

I should admit though that I might have gone a tad overboard on the parts swap. Because of that, there is a bit of a difference of parts besides the head. The upper arms, for example, I used were from a "tank top" Roadblock with the lower flesh tone painted (I try to avoid painting joints too much whenever possible). Then it was much easier and took less paint to color match for the shirt.

The hands I choose because in the show Jayne had on a couple of occasions (if memory serves) donned a single shooting glove and the wrist bracer just felt right. Ruined a perfectly good Dreadnok for that. :twitch:

Dang. Looks like I'll be working on him tonight. I'll have to find some pics of Vera and Lux too to mod up some guns. The flesh paint looks real rough on the figure, but it's actually pretty smooth. I'm always hesitant about painting heads though...so that's why he's sat for so long. Mal actually has been scrapped for now. I'll have to start fresh on him. I need a new head, and can't find one I like for the life of me right now. I've been scouring all lines, ROC, SW, MU, Avatar, Terminator...and have found nothing. I'll keep looking though. Thanks for the kind words and I will keep you updated.

Totally right there with you on the painting heads... well the heads I don't mind so much, it's the eyes and eyebrows that continually piss me off. :twitch:

I think the head I used for Mal was from Bravo Team, but I'm not even close to 100% on that.

Out of curiosity, what type/brand/color of paint are you using for the flesh tones? I'm using Model Masters Acrylic and mixing the different paints to various degrees of shading. I'm also thining them down significantly.

I'm a cheap ass and use (gasp!)Apple Barrel. I know people frown on them, but I've NEVER had an issue with them. Thin, multiple coats that are allowed to dry before another is put on. I've been using them for years and love them. Cheap and more than a rainbow of colors.

Nothing wrong with using what works for you. I tend to use muted/earthy tones so the wide array of colors doesn't do much for me. However, MM makes me wonder sometimes how many variants of green (for example) does one really need? If it needs to be varied, I just do a small mix in a water bottle lid. The only thing I really like that level of variety on is flesh tones, because it is a little slice of hell mixing those from scratch. I know, I've tried.
